ChatGPT has generated a brand new app sector — and European devs are leading it

Europe is the hub of a new sector of AI conversation apps that ChatGPT has produced. These apps have been downloaded 23.6 million times from the Google Play Store since the tool's November 2022 launch, according to App Radar's analysis.

The study found 40 AI chat apps that employ ChatGPT or related technology and had over 10,000 users. The developing market saw Europe emerge as the worldwide leader. 14 apps with 8 million downloads, or 34% of the market, were created in the continent.

Nine apps with 2.7 million downloads came from the Americas, while seven apps with 7.4 million downloads came from Asia. Eight additional apps with 5.2 million downloads were from unidentified nations.

Co-founder and managing director of App Radar Thomas Kriebernegg consider the boom one of the most explosive he has ever seen in a new industry. He significantly attributes the perception of ChatGPT as ground-breaking and media interest in generative AI. Talented developers and a receptive public have helped to further speed up the expansion in Europe.

"customers in Europe, on the whole, are considerably more open to experimenting with new technology than customers in other places. When you compare usage statistics for fintech apps and solutions in the UK with the US, you can see it plainly, Kriebernegg told TNW via email.

"This culture allows European app developers to quickly expand their user base before entering new markets."

Turkey is the continent's outstanding nation, attracting 5.9 million downloads across four apps, including the top three. The nation is a potential powerhouse in the market with a growing developer ecosystem, a mobile gaming hotspot, policies that assist startups, and a burgeoning record of tech triumphs led by Geir. But it will be difficult to turn this early advantage into a prosperous ecology.

Promising user bases in the latest generation of AI chat apps haven't yet translated into substantial earnings.

At the moment, AI chat apps are usually funded by advertising and premium memberships, but the core functionality is virtually free. Developers must provide distinctive services with significant value if they want to attract a sizable, paying consumer base. Unfortunately, it seems that existing consumers are unwilling to invest in new apps.

However, Kriebernegg anticipates that the industry will keep expanding for the time being.

According to him, "Often app segments get dominated by 10 or 20 apps that account for the overwhelming majority of users." There is plenty of room for new competitors because eight apps currently have more than one million subscribers.

"New entrants will find it much harder to compete unless they have something special and innovative to offer as the market begins to consolidate and leaders emerge."

The majority of the existing apps are found in the Google Play Store's "Productivity" and "Tools" categories, which show that they were made for daily duties and work. The 'Entertainment' category has a smaller group that's meant for friendship.

Analysts anticipate the emergence of new use cases relatively soon, but it's still not clear whether users will ultimately favor specialized AI apps or "one-stop shops" that can handle a variety of activities.

ChatGPT seems to primarily offer a more intelligent search function or a quicker approach to draught messages for the early app users. The popularity of the model's Q&A features may further worry Google about the direction of search.

"ChatGPT apps enable this type of natural searching, presenting information in a really intuitive way," claims Kriebernegg. In comparison searching for these terms or questions on Google, it may be more accurate and quicker. People are therefore embracing ChatGPT apps as personal assistants in a big way.

But it's obvious that this is only the beginning. I predict that once people fully understand generative AI, they will begin to consider how to automate routine chores or provide assistance with creativity, such as in the creation of art or music.
