A government-industry AI task force will be established in the UK with an initial investment of £100 million, to enhance the nation's sovereignty and competitiveness in the sector.
To take advantage of foundation models' applications in public services and throughout the UK economy, the task force will create systems that train on enormous volumes of data, like ChatGPT and Google Bard.
The government estimates that the technology will add billions of pounds to the nation's GDP, which, based on forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is anticipated to decline by 0.3% this year.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that "harnessing the potential of AI provides enormous opportunities to grow our economy, create better-paying jobs, and build a better future through advances in healthcare and security." The government, for instance, believes that AI has the potential to hasten diagnosis and the creation of new drugs.
The task force will collaborate with the industry to assure the "safe and reliable use" of foundation models, both on a scientific and commercial scale, to boost corporate and public trust in artificial intelligence. This will be carried out by the rules outlined in the March-released AI Regulation Paper.
The task force will be run by a Chair who will be chosen this summer, and it will answer directly to the Prime Minister and the Technology Secretary. Within the following six months, the first pilot initiatives aimed at public services are anticipated to begin.
The £100 million fund comes after a £900 million investment was made in a new exascale computer and a special AI research resource to give the UK the processing power needed for the next stage of AI.
The UK doesn't want to pass up the potential to maintain its competitive edge as numerous nations increase their spending on AI. Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan stated that "we need to act now to seize the opportunities AI can offer us in the future."
